Chrisy brings a deep understanding of the Gulf Coast region’s unique culture, resources, and occupational health and safety needs, drawing from her extensive experience in contingency planning, emergency response, and incident management while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Legionella Exposure Risk Management
In the summer of 2015, a legionellosis outbreak attributed to Legionella bacteria exposure from a contaminated cooling tower caused 16 deaths in the South Bronx. This prompted New York State (NYS) and New York City (NYC) to enact emergency regulations in 2015 that focused on cooling tower maintenance as the most effective approach to managing Legionella exposure risk.
A National Emphasis Program (NEP) was announced on July 13, 2023 by OSHA and detailed in Compliance Directive – Warehousing and Distribution Center Operations (CPL 03-00-026). The directive applies nationwide to warehousing and distribution centers, mail/postal processing and distribution centers, parcel delivery/courier services, and local delivery industries, as well as high injury rate retail establishments.
Sampling and Analytical Considerations for Beryllium
Beryllium (Be) is a strong, light metal useful in electronics, aerospace, and for windows in radiation detection equipment. From a worker health perspective exposure to beryllium is linked to beryllium sensitization and Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD), which is incurable, debilitating, and potentially fatal.
